Final Evaluation

To start my second artefact I spent many hours browsing the internet looking for genres and the sub genres that fall under this category, after doing so I chose to do a Crime Thriller opening. This still wasn’t enough for me to fully understand what was required. I then decided that to get the true effect of a crime thriller I would have to watch a few to compare similarities. I watched 10 different film openings and noted down the similarities.

I used the idea of making my opening black and white (film-noir), this alongside the fact that I decided to film whilst it was raining I thought gave a dark, gloomy and unexpected feel. Another thing that I noted down whilst watching the openings was that there was either minimal speech or none at all and I also noticed that the openings often had a song playing over the background. I chose to use Digetic sound because I thought it gave an over all better effect, plus the lyrics express the storyline because the song is called pain. I feel that my media product represents the young crime social group; this is because I planned the storyline on a teenage murder. This idea first came into my head whilst I was watching the news and a young person was stabbed to death. I feel this way it shows how worrying things are becoming in society due to teenage murders.

Once I uploaded my filming to the computer I noticed that certain parts were very slow and almost boring to watch. So, what I decided to do was to cut small sections out during certain shots, use the transition called cross fade to give the effect of time skipping. I liked this idea because it gave the long walking shots some interest and it looked effective. In the last shot (storyboard 12) where person A turned around and screamed it all seemed to happen a little too fast. So, I split the clip just where person A shuts the fridge door and slowed the second part of the split clip down. This I feel made the scream have more significance. Even though whilst I was filming it was raining, once I had used the effect of black and white you couldn’t notice that it was raining anymore, so I used a special effect that was on the Macintosh computer which was meant to look like rain. I thought this effect was very lifelike and it made the atmosphere a little gloomier.

To attract my audience I made my opening scene plain. Person A is walking and talking on her mobile phone, person B however cannot be seen until person A walks of screen. To find out what people thought of my work I asked 5 people to watch it and give feedback on my work. The general response was that my work was good but in some places the lighting changed and this affected the continuity of my work. Unfortunately there was a little jolt to the filming which was obvious (between storyboard numbers 9 and 10) I had to cross fade the two clips therefore there’s a small skip in the position of person A. The audience that viewed my work also commented on the fact that I had given lots of hints as to what genre of film my work was set as in the way I had asked people to act e.g. person B keeps looking around to see if anyone’s watching, this gives the effect of someone being a shifty character.

Once I had finished filming and my final artefact was burnt onto a disc, me and some other members of my class took our work into a different class and asked them to fill in our questionnaire. I overall received 15 questionnaires’ that were filled in and good feedback even though I didn’t ask them for their gender or age. I should have included these questions because this would then give me a more accurate result and it would then show me a brighter insight into my target audience. Generally after looking through numerous thriller/crime films I picked up some general hints into the genre which I thought about and tried to include this general idea into my work. I have sorted through the responses and have put them into a table which follows;

Overall I am very happy with the response that people gave me. This shows me that the signs I was giving into the genre are correct. I intended my film to be a crime/ thriller and most people did think it was a thriller, which is excellent because this means I have hopefully fully looked into the genre before I started filming.

Before I started media studies I had never used a digital camcorder before, so artefact one was a little poor. However I feel that my second artefact was a lot better. Over this period of time I have learnt how to use the Apple Macintosh computers confidently. I now know how to upload film from a camcorder, how to crop certain clips, split clips, add credits, add audio, extract audio, add effects ,transitions burn my work to a disc and much more. Also I now know that I need to make my work flow better and keep the continuity of lights, sound, acting etc. keep on time and fit together. Media is a subject where things must fall under certain trends or must be up to date with all the latest technology otherwise there is no point in wasting your time. This has been a working progress and overall I am very happy with my work, but obviously if I had more time, and if I had better equipment and a studio to work in, my work would be a lot better but so would anyone’s. It’s great to see what I have achieved with such little time and so little equipment needed.

Storyboard

This is my storyboard. Since I first created this I have made some notable changes such as, my credits are now at the end of my work not at the beginning I thought this was better because the start was a little more sudden. I have also slowed some clips down and sped some up because it looked more effective. This also made slower clips seem quicker or vice versa.

Sound and Vision

These are my sound and vision scripts. I have used 5 second intervals to show exactly what you can hear and what you can see at these times.

My Questionnaire

I asked 5 people to view my work and ask them to fill in this short questionnaire.

The feedback I received was generally good and I am pleased with what people have said. Most people agreed with what music and effects I used. One person thought the genre of my film was Romance, but the other four people either said horror, crime or thriller which I thought was a generally good response. I think that because I watched the openings to the 10 films that I watched I managed to incorporate a few good ideas.

Shooting Script

This is the shooting script I used for my filming. It has taken a while to upload because I needed to create a new copy in a relevant programme. This way I could upload it.

Finished Work

I have now completed my second artefact. Unfortunately due to the deadline for this work, I no longer think I will be able to upload my work to YouTube, however If this does become possible I will upload it.
I have also uploaded my research even though I did forget to upload it backwards so that it followed in chronological order.

Now all I need to do is evaluate my work, burn it to a disc and upload all the relevent storyboarding ect.

Artefact Two

During the past few weeks I have been working on the start of my new artefact, I have chosen the genre of Crime. After many hours of research I found out about the different subgenres of crime films such as thriller, mystery and film noir (research to follow). I then came to the decision that I wanted a crime thriller crossed with film noir. I chose this as my genre because I found it the most interesting. And I chose to have my artefact black and white (film noir). I then planned my artefact with a shooting script, storyboard, vision and sound script and the research to complete the planning.
As I started filming I realised that my original idea wasn’t as good as I thought it would be so I changed a few aspects of it and have now finished filming and I am currently editing. But as I went to upload to the Mac computer I realised that the tape I used out of the camcorder was damaged and I had to have it fixed which set me back a lesson, but I have now picked myself up again and am currently on time with my deadline. Today I am going to add sound to my artefact using a song I chose because the lyrics are about pain, which I thought would suit my film because it is about a murder. Once my artefacts is finished I will hopefully upload it to YouTube and ask people to view my artefact and comment on the good and bad points, which will hopefully help with the final evaluation.

Artefact One

I haven’t updated in a while so this is going to be a long post.

Our first artefact was the 180 degree rule. We were about to finish editing our final piece we then realised that we was missing a reverse action shot. So, rather than adding it in I suggested re filming to get a good effect overall. In our group I was the “camera woman " I filmed other members of our group acting so that we accomplished the best results and what we wanted in our artefact. We changed it so that we had a reverse action shot of another group member opening the door, then I went the other side of the door and captured them opening the door from the other side.

We have now also finished our final editing. We have added in music at the credits and given it a title. We think our work is better now that I have re-filmed it.

Week 3

Following the 180 degree rule we learnt about "Hypodermic Syringe" and "Two Flow". We learnt that "Hypodermic Syringe" is as if the producer is injecting the audience with their product. Two flow is when the producer uses the feedback from the audience e.g. booing or laughing. This is important because media is a large industry and any changes they can use will help their product become more desirable.

We then found out our final topic for the first piece of coursework we are doing on the 180 degree rule. We have to record someone walking through a door sitting down with another person and then saying 2 sentences. We then took stills and are currently creating our story board.

Week two

Today we started our work on the 180 degree rule. We started on a practise story board did a rough copy and took some still images to do our better version. It took a while to get started because we wasn't really sure what stimulus to use but in the end we decided on dancing. We are now currently making the final version of our storyboard ready to submit as our work.

My First Lesson

I have just started the AS Media Studies Course at Smithdon High School. To Start thecourse we had a little time to learn how to use the equipment, we was also given a sheet with all the different camera angles and was asked to have a go at them.

It was quite interesting because when I came home that night I noticed things on the television that would normally not strike me about camera angles and certain shots. Following this we then learnt how to upload what we had recorded on the camcorder to the Macintosh ready for editing.

After this taste of "Media Life" I know that this course will be interesting. Bring on the next lesson!
